The Stonewall Inn

(67 Ratings)
Where it all began

Stop in and check out the landmark bar that basically started the gay rights movement. On June 28, 1969, New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn. It wasn't the first time, but this time a riot broke out on Christopher Street. The following week of protests around Stonewall sparked a movement for LGBTQ+ Americans. Cross this historic site off your travel bucket list and pay tribute to those who paved the way for LGBTQ+ rights.

Classic Gay Bar

You have to visit the Stonewall if you visit new york to pay hommage. We went during the day so I can't comment on the night life. There were about 6 old men at the bar. They were all REALLY friendly. The upstairs part had a few older women in it and i think it might be the "lesbian section". The bar is very typical. It had one open room downstairs, a pool table and a bar. The upstairs is much the same with a bar and seating area. Hope this helps!

Strange crowd

this is where it all started but the night we popped in it was possible not a good night to go (midweek), crowd was older not much chatting or fun, we had one and moved on, but as i said it could have been the night we where there ? but worth a visit as icon value.

I stop in now and then

Not a bad place, but a weird mix of people. Nice bartenders. Met one really nice older guy once who layed out how it looked in 1969 so I will always hold this one dear.

How can you go wrong where Pride began?

I will admit that the crowd was a bit older than I am usually comfortable with, but the staff was exceptionally friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. The customers were kind and approachable, the bartenders attentive and pouring with a heavy hand... This is a must visit for any GLBT American with an appreciation for history and an enjoyment of a laid back atmosphere. I strongly reccomend it.
