The Monster

(131 Ratings)
A West Village institution

Walk in at street level to the piano bar/lounge which retains its historic charm. Don't let the vintage decor discourage you, pull up a stool and the friendly crowd and fun singers will have you hooked. For a change of pace, work your way downstairs to find drag shows and a dance floor.

My favorite bar in Manhattan

As a French-Canadian (Quebecker) tourist, I visited NYC at the end of April 2010 for one week. I went to the Monster three times for the happy hour. I liked the mix crowd, for it is not snobbish at all. The atmosphere at the piano bar level is relaxe and friendly. The basement level which has the dance floor was neither exceptionnal nor boring. In other words, the dance floor is not better or worse than the others that I have seen in my life. In all, I have nice memories of this bar, for I met nice guys there.

Tuesday Night!

I like to go to the Monster on Tuesday. On Tuesday, they play disco. It's good to get away from that ridiculous house music that all of the clubs only play now. The upper level is a piano bar. The lower lever is the dance club. Over all, older guys come here. However, young guys do go to the Monster.

I don't think we're in Chelsea anymore.....

This place is great! It's laid-back completely un-pretentious. The crowd is very diverse and friendly....Monster is a good place to start the evening. Friday and Saturday nights the DJ goes for good, old fashioned house (Chicago and Philly style not the mind numbing stuff they try to pass off as house these days). LOTS of cute Latinos!!!!

I Was Pretty Drunk...

when I got there. Got a good drink. The crowd was mature, but everyone seemed to have a good time on the dance floor. The DJ wouldn't play anything mainstream even with a $10 tip. But I had a really good time.
